Production Simulation as a Boundary Object

Huskvarna,
Sweden
Closing date: 30 December 2024

Are you ambitious and motivated students looking to explore the transformative power of production simulation? Join us in investigating the transdisciplinary role of production simulation at SAAB Surveillance Huskvarna

The topic

In modern manufacturing and production environments, the alignment between sales and production is critical for organizational success. Sales teams aim to meet customer demand and maximize revenue, while production teams focus on efficiency, quality, and cost management. The disconnect between these two functions often leads to challenges such as overproduction, stockouts, delayed orders, and suboptimal use of resources. A further challenge is related to the evaluation of new bids, where new investments in production capabilities might be necessary to meet the increased demand. Simulation tools and the interpretation of simulation results have the potential to serve as a boundary object—a shared point of reference—that can bridge the gap between sales and production, fostering better collaboration and informed decision-making.

This thesis will explore how simulations and their results can act as a boundary object to enhance the collaboration between sales and production teams. The study will investigate the role of simulations in aligning goals, improving communication, and facilitating joint decision-making processes. The disconnect between sales and production functions often leads to inefficiencies and misalignments in manufacturing organizations. Despite the potential benefits, the use of simulation as a boundary object between these two functions has not been extensively studied. Engaging in this Master's thesis provides a unique opportunity to explore production simulation while gaining valuable experience in working with a large technology-influenced company.
